Other Types of Warehouse Racking Systems Available
Drive-in/Drive-Thru Racks
Drive-in and drive-thru racks are used with fork lifts and pallet jacks. A drive-in rack offers tight storage of boxes, ample aisle area, and allows the fork lift to enter the aisle from one side. Often, boxes are stacked against a wall, and inventory is taken from one end. These racks use the LIFO method for picking inventory – last in, first out. Similarly, a drive-thru rack provides good storage capacity, but allows access from both ends. It uses the FIFO method of retrieval – first in, first out. This is ideal for dated or time-sensitive products. Both drive-in and drive-thru racks make efficient use of storage space.
Push Back Racks
Push back racks are designed to handle a high level of inventory in a small amount of space. Each rack has a number of trays that can accommodate different pallet sizes stacked up to four high and six deep. The trays are on angled rails that actually push back or forward under the weight of the boxes. When boxes are deposited in the tray, gravity moves the rack back to a new spot and an empty tray appears. The tray can be brought forward for inventory picking, making it easy to choose the appropriate boxes. Push back racks are versatile and efficient for small spaces, and although a fork lift or pallet jack can be used, they are not necessary with this rack.
Carton Flow Racks
Using carton flow racks virtually insures proper turn-around of inventory and allows for dense storage. Boxes are stacked from the back and picked from the front, making the FIFO (first in, first out) method easy to implement. This system can be accessed from both sides, so stocking and picking can occur simultaneously. Inventory flows from back to front on either square or layback frames. The back row inventory serves as reserved supplies that are easily accessible on demand. Carton flow racks save space and are easy storage units.
